On a Friday morning as many were probably heading to their day jobs, The Pearl Guide team had a different idea for the day. We were headed to the newly refurbished Jinja Sailing Club and boy did I welcome news of the trip with delight, one can always use such an excuse to escape the hustle and bustle of Kampala City on a Friday. There we were, Joshua and I at The Oasis Mall parking lot waiting for Lauren and Philip to arrive with the journey’s snacks and soft drinks and as soon as they arrived, we set off on our journey. It wasn’t long before we were in Jinja Town.

DSC_0597 (1024x680)Located on the shores of Lake Victoria, near the Source of the River Nile on Plot 1 – 5 Pier Road, Nile Crescent is Jinja Sailing Club. Upon entrance into the gates at Jinja Sailing Club, one gets a spectacular view of the lake in the vicinity. As you slope down the tarmacked road that leads to the club, to your right is the main establishment which houses the  club’s redesigned restaurant, the bar which has been renovated giving it a modern plush look and to your left is a smaller building that houses conference facilities.

Next to it is the parking lot and the lush green gardens with umbrella trees coupled with coconut trees evenly spaced out, which offer different seating options for guests who want to either dine from the outside as they feel the tranquility and breeze from the lake.

The Captain’s Table Restaurant

Whether you are dropping by for a quick-lunch or with your loved one for a dinner date or with a large group, the Captain’s Table provides a perfect place to dine. The newly renovated restaurant offers a spectacular view of sunsets on the lake while you dine in the evenings. With plush interior décor, air conditioning and soft music playing in the background, one feels a delightful ambiance in the restaurant suitable for a pleasant fine dining experience.

This is mainly continental, local and specialty Indian Tandoori dishes. With an expanse menu, their food is evenly priced if you put into consideration the size and ration of their food portions. With the restaurants opening hours being from 12PM – 10:30PM, dining is all à la carte, however on Sunday’s they serve a popular family buffet in the gardens from 12:30PM – 3PM.

Starters and Soups

With an expanse menu that includes soups and salads, for starters I would recommend the Assorted Mezzeh Platter which includes hummus, tabouleh, baba ghanouj, jajek with pita bread (25,000 UGX), In case you don’t feel like having Middle-eastern, there’s other choices to select from, such as the Chicken Satay served with peanut butter sauce (14,000 UGX) or Victoria Fish Tikka Ajwaini which is marinated cubes of Nile Perch cooked in clay oven (22,000 UGX).

For Main Course

I would recommend Grilled Chicken Breast with Rosemary Sauce which is served with home style potatoes and vegetables (25,000 UGX), their Steak Rossini (28,000 UGX) also comes highly recommended. It’s served with choice of either mushroom/ pepper sauce with an addition of either mashed potatoes or vegetables.

If you would rather go conventional being next to the lake, try their Old Fashioned Fish served with fries will do well (25,000 UGX).

Please note that Indian Cuisine is served from 12PM-3PM & 7PM – 10:30PM and the price ranges from 12,000 UGX for a Dal Tadka (Yellow lentils tempered with Cumin seeds) – 28,000 UGX for Butter Chicken Masala (Chicken tikka in tomato, ginger gravy).

For those with a sweet tooth, desert ranges from 6,000 UGX for either a Passion Fruit/ Lemon & Poppy Seed / Black Forest/ Coffee/ Carrot Cakes – 14,000 UGX for a Warm Mud Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream.

The food is all fresh, well presented and the waiters in their sailor style uniforms, come across as knowledgeable.

The Explorers Bar

The plush brand new bar and lounge is custom fitted with comfortable leather sofas, a well-stocked bar and to your right on entrance is a large plasma flat screen television meant to enhance the experience of soccer fans. The bar overlooks the lake so for those who would rather sip on a well-deserved beer at the end of the day, your comfort is guaranteed.

The beverage menu is quite affordable and ranges from as low as 2,000 UGX for Mineral Water and soft drinks – 35,000 UGX for spirits like a Johnnie Walker Blue Label. Tequila shots cost 6,000 UGX while local beers range from 4,000 UGX – 4,500 UGX. Imported beers cost 7,000 UGX. Nonalcoholic beverages range from 9,000 UGX for a Cappuccino or an Espresso – 12,000 UGX for Milkshakes.

The Gardens

The gardens offer quaint, individual seating areas with spanning views across Lake Victoria set the scene for quality time with friends or a loved one. The on-shore breeze offers a natural cooling and rejuvenating air to mask the heat of the day.

The Conference Centre

The brand new conference room is housed to the left of the main restaurant in its own exclusive building and is professionally designed offering Free WI-FI internet and can cater for everything from corporate events and team building to exclusive individual meetings.

The club is host to Movie Nights every Tuesday at 8PM on a big screen outside in the gardens, Fridays are theme nights to Bonfire Night at 8PM. They offer a perfect moment to share and engage in conversation, storytelling and general camaraderie.

Coming Soon
They will soon be offering sunset boat cruises on Lake Victoria which will offer their guests with relaxing trips on the lake.

Overall, Jinja Sailing Club is one of the ‘nicer’ places in Jinja and whether you are alone, with a loved one or a large group/ family, it is the perfect place to have a meal or sip on a cold beer at the end of a long productive day. For those that want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, Jinja Sailing Club comes highly recommended. It is also convenient for wedding receptions and private parties.
