Raves Café, Dining & Lounge: Fine dining on Kanjokya Street
When someone mentions fine dining places or eat outs in Kampala, the first thought that comes to your mind in terms of scene is either Kololo or Nakasero. The last place you would expect to find a fine dining eat out is Kanjokya Street in Kamwokya. Enter Raves Café, Dining & Lounge which opened on 16th November, 2013. Located on Plot 67B Kanjokya Street, Kamwokya Raves is right along the road. From the outside, the restaurant doesn’t look that inviting, which is a good thing perhaps since it doesn’t quite prepare you to how really nice it is on the inside. Upon entering, the first thing that grabs your attention as you walk down the metallic staircase that leads into Raves, is a waiter ready to welcome you. He will politely greet you and show you around the restaurant and ask you where it is you feel like resting your bottom. Raves is a simple but meticulously setup dining, café & lounge with everything from the advanced décor and the seats strategically planned and placed. Raves comprises of five dining areas to cater for all groups of people. For example, upon entrance on your right is the Café area which has low tables and comfortable chairs, to your left is the main entrance into Raves. When you walk into main entrance, to your right is the open kitchen, a counter that houses the barista who is always ready to serve you his espresso-based coffee drinks, the wine bar and right in the middle of the counter is a transparent well-lit glass casing that has pastries. To your left is one of the dining areas, next to it is the lounge area that’s convenient for those that work while on the go since they offer free Wi-Fi. Upstairs is the dining area with well-set dinner tables and a view that overlooks Kamwokya, The Bahai Temple and parts of Bukoto areas. It is private, romantically lit with Jazz and Classical music playing in the background in the evenings and has a patio around next to it that provides more privacy for diners.
Their goal is to offer a memorable dining experience with flavors of Mexican, Indian, Italian and a variety of continental dishes. Their breakfast menu prices start as low as 2,500 UGX for a fried egg to 25,000 UGX for the Raves special breakfast which includes 2 eggs served with toast, beef strips or sausage, baked beans with a glass of juice, coffee or tea. Their main course menu ranges from 26,000 UGX for a mushroom steak to 27,000 UGX for the Raves special fish curry.
For those looking for a fine dining experience, I would recommend a full course meal at Raves.
Starters and Soups
Raves serves a special soup of the day but do try out the mushroom soup which actually has mushrooms in it. Served with bread it costs 8,500 UGX. Your palate will definitely agree that it’s some of the best mushroom soup you’ve had.
For Main Course
Raves generally specializes in sumptuous, fresh and warm food with great presentation, great taste and well-timed service. But for the times I’ve been there, I would recommend either Beef Fillet Steak which is a well marinated beef fillet grilled to perfection served with either mashed potatoes, fries or rice and accompanied with a salad and tomato soup on the side (25,000 UGX) or Beef Quesadillas which is Spicy Mexican beef with melted cheese stuffed in two tortillas served with rice and beans on the side (20.500 UGX). If you have never tried Mexican food and fancy cheese then make it a point to try this meal. Their melted cheese stuffed tortillas, ‘mmmmm’ that stuff is too delicious to pass on. They are pretty generous on the cheese and as I write this article, I am day dreaming about that cheese melting into my mouth.
If you fancy desert then I would recommend trying out their black forest cake (7,000 UGX) or a white chocolate cake (8,000 UGX).
But for those looking for something different, you can eat your way through their Panini, pizzas or pastas. If you have a much rather voracious appetite, then try their burger menu which is hugely tempting.
No fine dining place would be complete without beverages, so Raves like other restaurants serves alcoholic beverages. Imperative to note though is that while the food is fairly priced, the drinks are a little costly. A glass of wine costs 10,000 UGX, beers cost 6,000 UGX, while a bottle of mineral water and sodas cost 2,500 UGX. A medium-sized glass of juice costs 7,000 UGX while a large glass costs 10,000 UGX. All fruit punches cost 11,000 UGX while all smoothies cost 12,000 UGX. If you can’t work without your regular shot of caffeine then you should give their coffee a try. They have a really good barista and their coffee ranges from 6,000 UGX for a house coffee, but you should try out their Frappuccino (9,500 UGX), It’s really good.
If you want to treat yourself to a fine dining experience this festive season, then I would definitely recommend Raves Café. The very fact that it’s not over crowded, provides privacy, the service is well-timed and friendly and it has a great view of the surrounding areas of Kamwokya, makes it a favorable spot to go with your loved one or family for an uninterrupted meal at any time of the day. I love the relaxed feel of this place and it’s like a comfortable dining room. I definitely would return to try more dishes.
Open 7 days a week from 8 AM – 10 PM. Raves serves brunch, lunch and dinner. Make sure to visit the Raves Café, Dining & Lounge and Enjoy! (I did!)
