There is no let-up in the popularity of fine dining and eating out activities in Kampala and on Mother’s Day, 11 May, the Seven Seas, a seafood and steak restaurant at Sheraton Hotel located at Ternan Avenue, introduced an all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch titled; the ‘Sheraton Sunday Brunch’ set in an intimate interior and calm atmosphere.

On a sunny, blue skied Sunday afternoon, a few minutes past midday to be exact; I arrived at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, maneuvered past the lounge and onto the path leading to the Seven Seas Restaurant. Clearly I didn’t know what to expect but lo and behold, there it was: on this wooden boat in the center of the restaurant, a beautiful setup of all kinds of food delicacies. From European, Asian, English, Mediterranean, Middle-Eastern food cuisines and to my right was a buffet of all types of Ugandan local food. It was surely a deserving welcome to a mid-afternoon brunch event. For a second I thought I was at a food contest. Seeing the event had already started and after being notified that for only 85,000 UGX, I could eat all that I could, I delved straight into the proceedings of the afternoon. Dining!

The Seven Seas Restaurant

The architectural design of the Seven Seas Restaurant is designed mirroring a dining area on a luxury cruise liner. With the structure predominantly made of wood, to your left at the entrance is a welcome cabin for the guests. On entrance, right ahead of you is the highlight of the Seven Seas Restaurant, a large magnificently carved wooden boat that doubles as a food display unit and a live cooking area, masterfully crafted and incorporated into the floor of the restaurant with blue light illuminating from the floor to give a beautiful illusion of the boat floating on water.

To your left are the broad wood and glass windows that let natural light into the restaurant and most of the dining area, while to your far right is the open kitchen area and to your immediate right is the wooden deck/terrace dining area of the restaurant completely designed with sailor equipment overlooking a waterfall.

“The guests have been asking for something for Sundays so we decided to come up with this brunch which basically runs from 12PM – 4PM. We are trying to take you out of town while you are still in town and it’s supposed to attract people after church on Sundays to come out and relax and have a fun-filled afternoon feasting on different cuisines.” Explained Ronald Safari, the Banquets, Conference Sales & Catering Manager.

Seated at the terrace, Lauren snaps away with his camera, as I taste the English pancakes with strawberries and ice cream. Music seeps in to the terrace from the live band while I have a casual chat with the Executive Chef of The Sheraton Kampala Dhanushka Kumara about the cuisine served at the brunch.

“Should we expect the same cuisine at every Sunday Brunch?” I asked. “We are going to keep bringing different food variations each week to keep the event interesting.” he said.

“So if a foodie comes in this week, the next time they will find different variations of food to taste. I would urge the locals to be adventurous and give a try to other cuisines. Be it Asian, European or Mediterranean, while for the expats I strongly urge them to try the Ugandan local food. Foodies have to give respect to cuisines from other cultures and I encourage them to be adventurous. If you never try, you will never know the taste of that particular food.”

He further explains that they are trying to promote a casual atmosphere at the Sunday brunch with live cooking stations plus different food stations to cater for different age groups. For example they have the Kids corner, Ice cream station, Fish & Beef station, Grill station, Shawarmar station etc.
