Overview & Features

Bushara Island Camp is a sustainable eco-tourism resort focusing on raising awareness and promoting protection of the environment. The camp evolved in response to the needs of the people of Lake Bunyonyi. Bushara Island Camp is one arm of a locally managed non-profit organization called the Lake Bunyonyi Development Company (LBDC). Profits from the campground assist local communities around the lake through activities like orphan care, income generation projects, agro-forestry, small livestock distribution, scholarships, craft co-ops, swimming instruction, and HIV/AIDS education. Your enjoyable stay on Bushara Island directly helps the local communities!

The volcanic lake is bilharzia-free and safe for swimming, sailing, canoeing, and, for the more adventurous, windsurfing. As well, we offer cultural tours, dance performances, night-time canoe tours of the lake, several bird watching tours on the island and around the lake, and walking trails and benches for quiet moments. Besides the natural setting, we offer friendly high-quality service and a good selection of delicious and affordable meals at “Swallows” Restaurant. Our luxury safari tents and range of cottages provide a variety of comfortable self-contained accommodations, each in a private setting with a view of the lake.

We stayed in Bushara for 2 nights in the treehouse. It felt like you were in the middle of nowhere and on your own island. We were unfortunate with the weather (it was pretty cold and raining) but we still managed to take out a dug out canoe and go swimming in the lake (belharzia free). The food was good although you have to give them some warning. The room was clean and comfortable and it was actually made more special by the lack of electricity and one of the members of staff bringing down your hot water for a shower! Overall a lovely place to get away.
