Lake Bunyonyi

Overview & Features

Lake Bunyonyi,(Place of many little birds) lies in south western Uganda between Kisoro and Kabale close to the border with Rwanda. Commonly referred to as the Swiss Alps of Uganda, the lake is revered to the various scenic islands it fathers. The depth of the lake is rumored to vary between 44 m and 900 m, which if true would make the lake the second deepest in Africa. It is one of the few lakes in the region that is rumored to be free of bilharzia and safe for swimming. The lake appears on the 5,000 Ugandan shilling note under the title “Lake Bunyonyi and terraces”.

Even if you only have a couple hours free while in Kabale make some time to see this lake. Its a cheap taxi ride from town and it is worth it! The many islands that dot this lake are absolutely gorgeous- and we only saw it on a hazy day. We only had a couple hours so we picked a hotel on the top of the hill to get a good view, but if you’ve got more time the canoe tours sounded wonderful and i think it would have been a unique way to explore the lake!
